Wilmington Day Two

Hello there, lovelies! I'm back with another riveting chapter in our Wilmington Chronicles! What will happen next? Will those crazy kids ever get serious? Read on to find out!
(Wow, Katie..Wow.)

We started our second day off with some great coffee and waffles at a local diner. Then, I just had to walk along that darn river walk again, so we perused the river/boats/scenery for the morning. And we saw dolphins in the river swimming! Lil cuties..

After all of our walking and talking and dolphin watching, we decided to go to the beach. Wrightsville Beach is only a 15-20 minute drive from Wilmington, and it's so pretty there. This was only Tom's second time seeing the ocean, so it was extra special.

We went and did a little shopping in the Wrightsville area, but due to it being the "off season" not too many places were open, like Rita's. I was sooo looking forward to Rita's. Darn this weather!

We had the yummiest little dinner at The Riverboat Landing. This restaurant was featured in the movie Dream a Little Dream, one of my favorite films as a kid. It is much more fun to eat there when it's warm because they have these little balconies you can eat on that overlook the river. Pretty romantic, huh?

Tom and I are in the process of cleaning our room and putting our new headboard together. I snuck down here to blog and I can hear him yelling my name. Oops. Better go!

Wilmington Day One

First of all, thank you for all of the lovely comments on my last post! It really warms my heart and you guys totally made my day more special! Love you all!

I took a ton of photos when we were gone and I hate to just bombard you with a million photos in one post, so I decided to break it up a bit. I'll be sharing bits and pieces of our trip, including the engagement :), for the next few days so be prepared for tons of pictures.

Consider this your warning.

Day One

The drive took forevvvvver! We were originally planning on leaving Illinois suuuper, suuuper early on Thursday morning, but Tom decided it would be better to leave Wednesday night when I got off work. So the car was all packed and ready to go when I left work that night and all we had to do was drop lil Oscar off at my sister's house.

We were on the road by 7pm Wednesday night and arrived in Wilmington around 2pm. Not too shabby

The mountains are always my favorite part of the drive! On the route we take, you actually drive right through them on all these winding, curvy roads with tons of tunnels. Tunnels are awesome. Maybe because they remind me of The Perks of being a Wallflower..

But I digress.

As soon as we arrived at the hotel, we unpacked and immediately crashed until dinner time. We were total bums that night and just walked to get dinner at Hell's Kitchen ( awesome place), and then walked the river walk for a bit. The river walk is one of the cutest things about Wilmington. It is a huge stretch of dock that follows the river all the way through the downtown area. So extremely beautiful and peaceful. Google it!

The downtown area has this little spot of trees with cutie cute little lights on them. Whenever I walk by them I am immediately reminded of Dawson's Creek, and then I am happy. Goodness, I am such a nerd for that show.

Until recently, my favorite shopping destinations were Forever 21, Kohl’s, Nordstrom Rack, Macy’s, etc. etc. However, after reading about successful shopping trips via thrifting from fellow bloggers, I wanted to give it a try. Oh my goodness, it is phenomenal.

Here are a few photos and purchases from a recent thrifting adventure…

Although thrifting is new to me, I am slowly learning how to be successful. It does require patience, as going through the numerous racks can be tiresome. Areas I always look at? Blouses, dresses, boots and purses. As these are the areas I devote the most time to, I am usually most successful there J Come visit me and say hello! Thanks for having me!

Pretty in pink

Hi there, Katie Did It readers! I'm Tieka from Selective Potential. I'm so happy to be guest blogging for Katie while she's out of town! I thought in light of Valentine's Day, I'd style up this little pink, floral skirt in a winter outfit. We've been having a really mild winter here in Michigan, so I was able to get away with bare sleeves, but of course I wear a coat when I'm out and about outdoors!

I love layering knee-high socks underneath my boots for added warm in winter. Granted though, I honestly feel like tights are warmer than jeans! What are you guys planning on wearing for Valentine's Day? I think for the actual day tomorrow I'm going with a pretty heart-print dress and floral wedges.

Guest Post- Sometimes Sweet!

Kale Chips

I absolutely love potato chips, but since I've been on a no-sugar kick I've been avoiding starchy foods as well. A great alternative to potato chips are kale chips. At first glance these may seem a little scary to make OR eat, but trust me, they're super simple to create and taste delicious!

First off, buy a bunch of kale at your local grocer. If your regular store doesn't carry it, try your natural foods store, but it should be pretty easy to find.

Preheat your oven to 350.

Tear the leaves off of the long stem running down the middle. I tossed the leaves into a colander as I tore them off. Rinse the leaves WELL and dry thoroughly. We don't have a salad spinner, so I just used a paper towel to try off each individual piece.

Place the leaves in a single layer on parchment paper, on a cookie sheet. Below you'll see that I accidentally used wax paper at first...no big deal until the oven started smoking! haha. When that happened I just moved the kale straight onto the cookie sheet and it was just fine. But anyway, drizzle olive oil and vinegar all over the leaves, then top with sea salt. If you don't want to do the vinegar you can just do olive oil.

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until you notice the leaves shrinking and looking crispy. We had no issues with the kale being soggy whatsoever, and each chip was crispy and REALLY delicious!

Tom and I are leaving tonight after I get off work! I am soooo beyond excited, but you probably guessed that already.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are going to drive through the night and we should, hopefully, arrive in Wilmington around 3 pm or so. I have been checking the weather non stop and it looks like we should have fairly decent temperatures. Not warm enough for swimming like the last time I was there, but warmer than here!
I just hope we don't run into snow on the way back.
I had the hardest time packing last night! It is so hard for me to plan my outfits ahead since I usually try a million different items of clothing on before making up my mind. So I basically just grabbed everything I thought I MIGHT want to wear. Tom hates it when I over pack, but I can't help it! Then I had to have a whole other suitcase just for shoes and belts...I'm difficult. :)

So adios, my dear blogging friends! I will be back in a week!

Drive

Have you guys seen the movie Drive yet?

Holy amazing.

Tom and I watched it last night, and I was completely blown away. Everything about it is incredibly well done: the acting, the scenery, the story, the music. Seriously.

I purchased the soundtrack to this movie months ago when I had heard from numerous people that it was good. There are so many great songs that make me feel like I am in the 80's. Actually, SO much of this movie is reminiscent of the 80's. Which I love, even though I only experienced like 3 years of that era. Oh well!

Ryan Gosling is such a babe. He's babelicious. Walking around in tight t-shirts and jean jackets..I love it when guys wear jean jackets, always have. It's my weakness. ;)

Looks aside, I actually think that this movie shows some of his best acting. Blue Valentine will always be, in my opinion, his best acting but this comes in close second. There is so much that he says, or doesn't say since he really has barely any long lines. He plays a very quiet, soft spoken, mysterious man, which he pulls off so effortlessly. So much of his acting in this movie is done with his eyes and facial expressions. Same goes for Carey Mulligan, who is fantastic in this. The two of them have such amazing chemistry and most of it is shown through the way they look at each other. And trust me when I say that he has some beautiful eyes. Haha.

And can I just say, the scene with Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan in the elevator..OMG SWOON!

You should go out and buy it or rent it. You won't be disappointed. Just beware- it gets extremely gory extremely fast. And you will be humming the songs for weeks. So you should probably buy the soundtrack too. My, I'm being awful demanding.

Bridge Over Troubled Water

Ahh, January. You keep surprising me.
It was in the low 60's yesterday, and the air was so warm and Spring like. Everyone was out walking and running. And it definitely made me happy.

How adorable is she?! I have loved watching her change as she gets older, and she always has some cute hair, and some cute outfits. Definitely quirky and fun. Her look makes me long to be a teenager again. All those fun looks and crazy hairdos. Now I am too chicken.

I really liked the outfit in these two above photos from the show Parenthood. I caught this episode a week or so ago and I loved her hair/makeup/outfit. So cute!

Plus, I totally think she rocks the half shaved look.

And I am so so happy that she is in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I think she makes the perfect Mary Elizabeth. Has anyone read that book? It is one of my all time favorites, and I cannot wait to see it!

I feel like this is a total 90's outfit, which makes sense since I was listening to the 90's Alternative/Grunge station this morning on Pandora. Love it.

I am in the process of figuring out what I'd like to do with this ole bloggie of mine. Cosmetically speaking. It needs a newer, structured look. More professional, not like you can tell I painted on those owls up there at the top or anything. Haha. I would love to have pages for my outfits/about me/contact etc. I guess I want it to look like a real blog. I am terrible at HTML and coding. Like, super awful. I would like to be able to figure it out on my own, but I am also willing to have it done for me.
Same goes for the pictures I upload. I know I've heard that uploading through Flikr or other photo sharing sites, the quality of the picture looks better. But I also become confused when figuring that out. I am the type that needs like step by step, dummy proof instructions.

Any tips from you smarties out there? Where do I start?

Weekend Fun

Another busy and nice little weekend! Saturday we had our little girls night, and it was just what I needed. Time to chat/vent/giggle.
Sunday I went wedding dress shopping with one of my closest friends and her wedding party. I wasn't quite sure what to expect since I have never been with to something like that, but it was good! She tried on around 10 dresses, and we all gave our opinions. Yes, it felt just like an episode of Say Yes to the Dress, but more drama-free. She didn't find a dress that was what she was envisioning, so we all went to lunch and then came home. More dress shopping will be done soon!

Oh, and I finally finished reading The Help this weekend. I have been reading a few chapters at a time for the last couple months, so I was glad to finish it. Tom and I watched the movie last night, and I really liked it. But it was sad. Poor little Mae Mobley!

On the agenda for tonight: watching New Girl.

Lengthy Update

Boy. I feel like with all of the pictures I usually update, I neglect writing about anything substantial. But then again, if I told you every detail of my daily life/routine, you would find out how boring I really am. Hah!
Nothing is very new or exciting in my life right now. My excitement these days comes from thinking about my future vacation, which is in 3 weeks, in case you were wondering. Being in Wilmington, with my lovie dovie is going to be too much fun.

Work is going well! I have been utilizing all of my French techniques and I'm pretty sure all of my clients are tres impressed (I don't speak French. There's my attempt). Actually, I am quite impressed with how easy the techniques are when applied to everyday hair. Usually I attend a class where the haircuts are all a bit wacky and avant garde, and then I have no one back home who will actually do it. But with the French cuts/styles, everything is customized to the client. So we work together and make beautiful hair.

I'm at a place now, at the salon, where I finally feel like I have some credibility. I've been there for a little over four years, but the first 2-3 years are definitely the hardest when it comes to gaining a clientele, or being able to look at a head of hair and know exactly what formula of color you want to use and why. It's nice having some of the newbies come and ask me for help on formulating or cutting. It gives me a sense of "Whew. I finally know what I'm doing".

Other than work, I've just been running around getting things done. Tom and I live in a big, old house that constantly needs to be cleaned for some reason. I think the ghosts that live here purposely make messes while we are sleeping. On my days off I am usually cleaning up, doing laundry, or (lately) playing Batman Arkham City. Great game. Oh, and cuddling with my Oscar.

Sometimes I think that my life should be more interesting. But I figure I should enjoy my calm, mellow life for now because someday I'll have kids running around, making even bigger messes than the ghosts do.

I also think I should mention how much I appreciate the comments I get from all of you! It makes my day and I don't always remember to respond, since I usually check them between clients at work, but I am totally working on it! I apologize if you have left one and I haven't said anything! But I love seeing new blogs and making new "blog" friends. :) I will actually be doing my first giveaway right before I go on vacation, as a thank you to all of you who follow my blog!

Tonight I am going to go hang out with some of my oldest, dearest friends from high school. We are having a girls night and I can't wait to lounge around in my pajamas and eat tons of food. Then, on Sunday I am going with one of my best friends to go wedding dress shopping! Eee! I can't wait! This will be my first time as a bridesmaid at a wedding. How exciting!
I also feel slightly old. One of my best friends that I have known for 10+ years is getting married. How crazy!

Hello lovelies! Today's Top Ten will feature my favorite looks from the Golden Globes! There were so many great dresses/hairstyles this year so it was hard to narrow it down!

10. Nicole Richie- I love how she always looks so cool. Like, she would be an awesome best friend. Haha. And I love her hair, too.

9. Jessica Biel- Love this color on her. The dress is gorgeous. And her brunette shade is so beautiful and rich. I think this is my favorite hair color on her.

8. Charlize Theron- This girl always looks great. Perfect dress, and her hair was so lovely. Definitely one of my favorite hairstyles from the night.

7. Julianne Moore- Seriously! She looks so awesome for her age! I love how the red hair and the black dress look against her porcelain skin. And the earrings add such a great pop of color. So pretty!

6.Evan Rachel Wood- What an amazing dress! So scaly and feathery and sparkly. It reminds me of a mermaid! Her haircut is super adorable, too.

5. Dianna Agron- Love, love, love this dress! The swan cutouts are amazing, and the color looks great on her. Plus, all that lace! I'm a sucker for lace!

4. Kate Beckinsale- I am seriously so in love with this dress. The color, the shape- It's too pretty for words! I think this would make a stunning wedding dress!

3. Rooney Mara- She is the cutest little thing. I love the black dress with her dark hair. And the cutouts are so cool. She looks like a bad ass, while also looking angelic. Plus, I always like the way her hair is styled.

2. Zooey Deschanel- I couldn't wait to see what she was going to wear, and I absolutely loved it! The colors are amazing on her, and I love how she chose more of a column gown, since she usually goes for more of a girly, innocent look. And that hair! I loved it! But, I think she might have been wearing a wig because I know lately is has been way longer. Unless she usually wears extensions..hmm. Quite a mystery..

1. Michelle Williams- Oh my. Oh my my my. This girl can never do wrong! Loved the dress, loved the color, loved the print, loved the shape. And I just LOVED her little headband! She looked stunning, and I am so glad she won! Eee I adore her!

Christmas Party

This past Saturday was our annual William Wesley Christmas Party. The whole salon comes, and there is dinner and dancing. SO fun for everyone to get together with their significant other and just hang out and enjoy the night.

We had a photobooth there this year, and it was the best time. I want there to be a booth like that at every function I attend!

I also won an award! Every year, one stylist is presented with the award, and this year it was me! How crazy! It takes everything into account- growth, performance, attitude, etc. I was so honored to be recognized.

Have I ever told you how much I adore my lovely boyfriend? He is pretty much the best. And recently, he definitely gave me one more reason to think so.

He gave me a late Christmas present that is so stinkin perfect..I cried.

We are going on a vacation, which is amazing since the last time we went anywhere big together was in 2008. And the destination..Wilmington, North Carolina! (if you read my blog, you know how obsessed I am with Wilmington)

Weekend Recap

This past weekend was such a busy one! I felt like I had no time to even lay down and sleep. I'm definitely glad that today is my day off so I can catch up on everything.

I had to work Friday and Saturday and then Sunday & Monday we had class all day from 8:30 to 5.
Saturday after work I got together with a group of my close girl friends and we had a gift exchange/ girls night. There was so much laughing and fun had playing Cranium, which is my new favorite game, and we ate tons of pizza while we lounged around in our jammies. So thankful for these wonderful ladies in my life!

I love my Minnetonka boots!

The class I attended was a huge how-to on French haircutting and balyage coloring. It was such an amazing experience! The teacher of the class was Candy Shaw from Atlanta, Georgia, and she has done all kind's of celebrity hair (Carrie Underwood's wedding! How awesome!) and been on television shows including What Not to Wear, and Say Yes to the Dress. The salon is called Jamison Shaw and it is recognized as one of the top salons in the world. She was brilliant. This class definitely changed my whole perspective on how to cut hair and also just life in general. Very inspiring and uplifting. My brain feels a little full right now because we learned sooo much. I can't wait to start changing the way my client's view their hair and start changing lives! Okay a little dramatic, but oh well!

The weather here is still super warm and amazing. Yesterday was in the 60's and today is just as warm. I am going to try and get a run in, and then go eat dinner with my cute little Granny! I hope everyone had a splendid weekend! Anything new and exciting in your life?

Resolutions

Every year I make a mental list of things I would like to accomplish, but I usually only remember a couple as the year goes on. This year I am going to make sure I remember, by making a list of them on here! Then you can all hold me to it!

1. Eat Healthier. I know, so cliche. But it needs to be done!

2. Gym time. Yep, another. But Tom is finally sold on going to the gym with me, so I think this time it is going to work out!

3. Read more. I have so many books that I have started and never finished. I love reading but I haven't been taking the time to do so lately. If you know of any great books, let me know!

4. Disconnect. I spend a ton of my time on the computer, just surfing around. Or on my phone- Facebook, Instagram, all of my games. It has gotten way worse since I got an Iphone. I need to make sure to remember to unplug every once in a while and find some entertainment in plain old life.

5. Save Save Save. I am not very good when it comes to money related matters. I have this problem- If I see something I want, I buy it without thinking. Otherwise if I don't, I think about it for days and days. It's creepy. So this year I would like to try and control myself and hold back the urge to buy every 10 dollar shirt I like at Target. It will be hard, but I know I will come out alive! Plus, I would love to save up to buy a new camera! A nice one! With a big, juicy lens!

6. Sloooow Doooown. This goes for everything. It's such a fast paced world and I need to make sure I stop to smell the roses every once in a while.

7. Be a better partner. Tom and I get along 80 percent of the time. And we usually don't fight, just arguments here and there about stupid things like toilet paper and socks. But every once in a while, usually around that time of the month, I can be super super bitchy and annoyed at everything. I feel bad for poor Tom because he gets the brunt of it. I hope to be able to recognize that I am in one of those moods, and I need to just calm the eff down. Haha. Such a lady problem.I also would just like to do more! Love more, listen more, appreciate more.

8. Spend more time with my family/friends. This one is a given. I love these people and I need to make as much time as I can for them!

9. Travel. I would love to visit more places this year! It has been so hard the past 4-5 years, since I have been at the salon, to take time off to travel! This year I am going to take as many little random trips as I can! Life is too short!

10. Education. This is a big one. And one that I have thrown around in my head for years. I would love to be able to take some classes. I only went to college for a year before I started going to Cosmetology school, and it has always been something that I have regretted. Not saying I hate my job, but it would be nice to have a college education. Just in case I end up changing my mind later in life, and just for a peace of mind. Education is so important and no one can ever take it away from you. I am going to force myself to accomplish this goal because I have tried so many times to make this happen, but I always get too scared! Not anymore! Brave Katie coming through!

Bare Legged in January

That's right. Yesterday was in the 50's here. So I decided to be rebellious and go all bare legged on January's ass. I wore my new, ridiculously comfortable sweater I got for Christmas, and paired it with this fun printed dress I got at a thrift store in Iowa City last summer.

Sometimes I can't find a thing to wear.

There are nights when I am trying to get ready, and I turn to Tom in exasperation and say "I have nothing to wear!". To which he always rolls his eyes and mutters something about me having too much to wear and hoarding clothes and blah blah.

Today, was one of those days. So I threw on my "Ihavenothingtowear" staple- jeans and a cardigan. If I don't feel like fixing my bangs, I throw on a pair of my glasses. Why? I'm not sure. I think it makes me feel better about my forehead being all exposed. :p

(ps- I totally ordered a pair of Ray Ban eyeglasses today that are too cute for words.)

New Year's Eve!

Happy 2012 to everyone! I am so happy that it is a new year, I need a fresh start!
Saturday night we went to a friend's wedding reception and it was a blast! I have never been to an event on New Year's Eve before because Tom and I usually hang out with friends/ family. I loved it though! There was tons of dancing, cupcake eating, and acting like big dorks. And at midnight, with champagne in our hands, we toasted to the new year. Perfect!

I have so many things that I would love to accomplish this year. I think I am going to do a post on those soon! It will be nice to get it all out there.

It has been quite lovely watching him grow from a boy to a man. We began dating when he was 18, and it is insane to see how different he has become, but also how much has stayed the same. He is such an amazing man! Seriously! He is so kind, sweet, and caring. He always puts his family and I first. He has the best work ethic I have ever seen. He will help anyone in need, even strangers! I can't tell you how many times he has come home saying he helped pull a car out of a ditch. haha. He also puts up with my obnoxiousness! He is so willing to do anything for me, even if it is to leave the warm house to go out into the cold, just for an outfit picture. I could go on and on but I'll quit bragging! haha, just kidding.

Best of 2011 (image heavy)

Hey everyone!
Today I am going to share some pictures from the past year. I didn't really start blogging until August, so here are some of my favorite moments you might have missed! Enjoy!

January

In January, I attended my work Christmas party! The theme was 20's, and we all had so much fun dressing up and dancing to the jazz band that came and played.

February

In February, I went to Iowa city to celebrate a friend's birthday. We all took a party bus up there, and it was definitely interesting. haha. I had just blown my eardrum out the day before, but was talked into going by my friends. Not a good choice. Iowa City is about an hour away from Moline, and that trek was a long one to take on a party bus, with loud music blaring. I survived though!

March

In March, I got new glasses. And I also got my first Iphone! I also started taking more self shots, apparently..haha. This was when I started growing my bangs out. They ended up reaching my chin before I gave in and chopped them.

April

In April, I got another pair of new glasses. Shown above.
Juuust kidding. I still wore the glasses shown below.

May

In May, the Titanic exhibit came to town! I am a huge fan of all things Titanic. I grew up watching the movie and swooning over Leo. That dang movie still makes me cry to this day, and I have seen it probably 100 times. Dangit. We also took a road trip to Ikea, Tom's first time there! He didn't find it as enchanting as I do, but fun was still had!

June

In June, we threw a farewell party for a co-worker who moved to Alaska. So sad! I can't wait to see her in January when she visits! I also colored my hair a more dramatic shade of Ombre, and continued to grow those bangs out! I took a week off and went to North Carolina, too! I went with a close friend, and we visited all the places where Dawson's Creek was filmed. Yep, I'm that girl. It really was the best trip ever! Wilmington will always be one of my favorite places on Earth!

July

In July it was my birthday! I celebrated with my family (my sweet little Granny is pictured above), and I was surprised at work with a Harry Potter cake. They know me too well! I also colored my blonde hair a darker shade, which was a huge, HUGE step for me. I have had my blonde hair for years and years and yearssss! But, it was a good change and I still don't regret it! Then I went with a couple of my best friends to see the final Harry Potter film at midnight, where I cried my eyes out for the last hour. Such a sad ending!

August

In August, I went red for the first time, and added some bangs! I also started blogging, and taking outfit pictures. We traveled to Chicago to see Incubus, too! This was my second time seeing them, the last time being when I was a sophomore in high school. Brandon Boyd has such an amazing voice! Then, Tom and I went to the World Series of Drag Racing, in Cordova. We camped out all weekend, and had too much fun. That trip is always my favorite time of the summer. This year marked my 7th summer going with his family. Aw.

September

September was spent going to a million birthday parties, and weddings. We also spent a whole weekend painting and completely redoing our living room. I also went to the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago, which was the cutest little place ever!

October

October brought with it some gorgeous weather and leaves. We went to the pumpkin patch, and dressed up for our annual Halloween party. Best month of the year!

November

In November, I bought my favorite tights! I also attended a New Found Glory show in Iowa City, which was super awesome. My hair colored changed yet again, to a brighter shade of red. And I ended the month spending time with my family for Thanksgiving.

December

In December, I ordered some pretty dresses from Red Velvet! One of which is shown here!
I also took a hilarious Christmas picture of my little family! Oscar looks so cute! It snowed for the first time this month, which is pretty odd, and I bundled up in my favorite Modcloth scarf. The She & Him Christmas album was pretty much the only album I listened to this month. I also wore my hair in an adorable hair bow, and went and sang karaoke with some of my best girl friends! And I colored my hair AGAIN, this time I went for a bright, bright copper. Yikes my hair went through a lot this year!

Tom and I took this picture one chilly night, after watching tons of Dexter and lounging in our pajamas, but I never posted it! It cracks me up.

How was everyone's Christmas weekend?
All went well here! We traveled around town to our different families house's, and ate tons of yummy foods. I love seeing everyone get together. It's hard for us all to be at the same place at the same time, so I just soak it all in. And giving gifts is the best part.
I got some awesome gifts, too. Yay! A few favorites: Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume, a signed Rob Zombie photo from a family friend, some Xbox games I asked for, tons of Fiestaware dishes. And lots of other lovely presents!
Still no snow here! We will see what happens! I hope this weather holds out and doesn't get super blizzard-like. New Years is supposed to be around 40 with some sunshine. Woo!

A Christmas Outfit!

In honor of it being Christmas Eve, I wore this to work today.

I have had this sweater hanging in the back of my closet for ever, and every Christmas I forget to wear it. Not this year! I've had it hanging on my door for weeks to make sure I didn't forget. Everyone at work loved it.

My mother had this sweater for years and years, and then I found it in our attic one day. It is the best!

Can you believe it? The days have been flying by so fast, I can hardly believe that tomorrow is Christmas Eve! Work has been sooo busy the last few days, and it has been absolutely lovely. This time of year is the best, and everyone is bustling around, in good spirits. We had our gift exchange and potluck today. SO much good food. My gift was a Harry Potter scarf..yay! And as of tonight, I am completely done with my shopping. Now comes the wrapping part. My least favorite!

Thursday Top Ten- Christmas Edition!

Today's Top Ten will be featuring my favorite movies to watch around the holidays.

10. Edward Scissorhands

Sure, this isn't exactly a "Christmas" movie, but it does feature an old Winona Ryder explaining to her grandchildren why it snows on Christmas. So I think it counts. I love this movie, even though it makes me feel so bad for poor Edward. I always end up feeling super sad! I mean, he makes it snow every Christmas, in California, just for her. Bring on the tears.

9. The Grinch

This is such a classic. It reminds me of being young and singing along to all the songs. That little Cindy Lou Who is the cutest! I hope my children look just like that little cutie!

8. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Another awesome classic. I think it is a tradition for families all across the world to watch this movie around Christmas. So many hilarious moments, that are even funny after seeing the movie over 50 times.

7. The Snowman

This really is one of the sweetest little movies. We used to watch this in school when I was younger, and it captivated me from the get go. It is very short, and wordless, but it is so stinking sad! If you haven't yet, watch it! You will love it.

6. A Christmas Story

Classic! This is probably the most watched Christmas movie in my family. For as long as I can remember, every Christmas we have watched this at my Dad's holiday get together. It has always been on in the background of our eating and gift opening. I remember always being so amazed/horrified by the kid who gets his tongue stuck to the pole. Yikes!

5. All I Want for Christmas

AHH! I love this movie so much. It is so cheesy and old, but my sister and I went through a stage when we would watch this almost every day. It features a young Thora Birch, and a young (smokin) Ethan Embry, so you really can't go wrong. It's so good!

4. Elf

I had to put this on here. It rules. The burp scene kills me to this day.

3 & 2. Home Alone 1 and 2

More classics! I used to have the biggest crush on Macaulay Culkin, and my first boyfriend Eric could have been his twin. But then he moved away and my heart was broken. He did, however, get me a set of turtle doves just like in the second movie (I know, so sappy). My mom still has my turtle dove and she puts it up on the tree every year. Ahh, young love!

1. Just Friends

This is probably on my list for one of the best movies ever, Christmas or not. My sister and I quote this movie ALL THE TIME. It is so hilarious. I'm talking, laugh out loud, pee your pants funny. Every character is perfect, and it all revolves around Christmas time! How perfect!
I'm actually about to go watch this right now.

The Blue Velvet Dress

Oh, Red Velvet. Such a weakness for me. Elsie and the girls make the most lovely dresses and when the newest collection was released, I only bought one dress (the Sewing Kit Dress) but I had such a hard time making the decision as to which dress to get.
Luckily, the shop had a great Black Friday sale on all of their dresses so I picked up two more!
This is one of them.

It is soo comfortable (comfort is huge for me), and the color is a super pretty shade of blue. I paired it with higher boots and a vest to go for more of a 70's vibe, but I also think this would look darling with some tights and a headband for a more dressed up look.

Weekend Fun

Happy Monday to everyone!

This past weekend was spent with my lovely niece and nephew, and trying to get ready for Christmas.
I babysat the kids on Saturday night while my brother went to his holiday party for work. They are getting too big! We went out to eat at the pizza place where my sister works, and then on the way home they totally fell asleep. I had all these fun plans and they went to bed! So I just curled up with Tom and watched Pretty Woman.

Jack fell asleep with his leg crossed. EEP! So cute!!

Sunday, we dropped the kids off at my brother's place and then went to a Christmas party with Tom's huge family. His mom's side has 10 or so brothers and sisters, plus all their kids, and their kid's kids. So many people. They rent out one of the little halls in town and everyone brings food and games and such. Yummy food and good people.

I'm off today and I am about to go to some shopping with my sister, then dinner. I love spending time with her! But she just graduated in November, and now has a "real" job, so my days off are spent alone! Wah! I went from seeing her every other day to seeing her once a week. Needless to say, I am super excited to see her tonight!

New Hair- Cest La Vie

I know what you're thinking. Another color, Katie? Another?!

I am a very indecisive person! And for the first time in a very long time, I am actually having fun with my hair changes. Life is too short. I thought that this sweater would be a perfect choice to debut the new color.

I decided that I wanted to lighten my hair a little, then color over it with a brighter red so that the color would look more vibrant. Well, we ended up picking out a light copper. I am going to put a darker coppery red on it after this fades a little, but it will be fun to have this for a little bit!

And saving the best for last, here is the lovely Mo from Fleur de Moi! My first guest post ever on here! This post is sooo stinking awesome. I love it and I love every single movie/style on here! Two of these movies are actually two of my favorite movies ever (The Virgin Suicides, 10 Things I Hate About You). Mo..get out of my head! But seriously, I love everything on here!

Hey ya'll! My name is Mo from Fleur De Moi and I'm super excited to be guest posting here today! I'm a big fan of Katie and her personal style. I'm super jealous of all the cute outfits she puts together and wish I could do the same. Unfortunately, with the job I have it's super hard to look cute on a day-to-day bases.

I work long hours on film sets surrounded by mostly men. I often long for the wardrobe that the females in the movies I work on wear. In honor of Katie's killer style and what I do for a living I thought I'd share my Top 5 Favorite Wardrobes I wish I had from movies.

1) Kat, in 10 Things I Hate About You

I remember being OBSESSED with Kat's clothing when this movie came out. I had to have everything that she wore. From her purple thermal top (which I actually still own) to her platform flip-flops (which caused many a sprained ankles). It's safe to assume that Kat's style is still deep in my subconscious when I go shopping to this very day.

2) Emily, in A Lot Like Love

This is TOTALLY a forgettable romantic comedy by every degree but I remember being consumed with envy over Emily's wardrobe. It's laid back but still with a tang of femininity. She also made a orange hoodie a must have in my wardrobe at all times.

3) Sarah, in Forces of Nature

Okay, by this point you may be questioning my taste in movies. I'm picking some pretty ridiculous films. This one is probably the worst. While the film is pretty horrible Sarah's clothing are just to fun to forget. The outfit she manages to put together at Wal-Mart is stellar. And her orange dress? I mean, I'd get married in that dress. I haven't seen the film since it was released in 1999 and I somehow still remember the quirky wardrobe.

4) The Lisborn Sisters, in The Virgin Suicides

Anyone who has seen this movie can not deny the whimsical 70s appeal to this wardrobe and the utter desire to hop into everything the Lisborn sisters wear. Some sisters stand out more than the others (i.e. Lux) but they all have pretty amazing duds. When I went to my high school prom I made it a point to find a dress just like the prom dresses in this film.

I was fortunate enough to intern for Albert Maysles (who was one of the directors of the film) a few years ago. I had loved the documentary before but fell in love with it even more after hearing stories about the dynamic mother-daughter duo. What I truly love about Little Edie's style is her ability to take old clothing that don't fit her conventionally anymore and make them into something new. Girl knew how to work it!

You guys, according to Blogger, this is my 100th post.
It's actually my 105th post, but I know I have some posts on here that were never published, so I'm counting this as the official number 100.
Wow!
It seems like just yesterday I was starting this blog, as a place to share my thoughts and randomness. I never really thought I would continue to post frequently, or that I would ever share outfits or photos from my life. I love this little blog and I hope you guys find some sort of inspiration from it.

I just want to say thanks to all of you who take time out of your day to come and visit my little corner. To all of you who leave such lovely and sweet comments every day. I can't express enough how much joy it gives me every single time I see a comment! To those of you who have supported me in each and every way. Weekend

Hello all!
It was in the high 40's today! Woo! What a warm December!

This weekend was extra fun- a group of us went Midnight Bowling.I haven't been since I was probably 15. Basically it is bowling, in the dark, with black lights, and loud music playing. Way more fun than you think. It is awesome!

Then on Sunday Tom and I did some Christmas shopping. I am only about 30 percent done. More will be done this coming weekend (hopefully). I also went to my mom's house Sunday night to eat dinner and say farewell to my grandmother, who left on a plane to Italy today to spend Christmas with her twin brother. It will be sad without here here for the holidays this year! But we are going to celebrate with her when she gets back in January.

I am about to go to bed with a sock in my hair. Seriously. I saw a picture on Pinterest ( obsessed) and I decided to try it out. Basically, you roll your hair into a sock bun, and supposedly when you are done you have beautiful curls. I am skeptical but I will definitely be letting you know how it goes.

All Bundled Up

It's cold around here! All the leaves have fallen and there is a definite chill in the air. We even had our first real snow fall. It all melted the next day, but it still counts! It is definitely beginning to feel like winter.

I just adore this coat I got from Target! I am bummed it is getting cold because I am going to have to move on to a more winter friendly coat- this one is rather thin.

I saw this vest on Ebay about a year ago, and I bought it instantly. Isn't it awesome?!

I've only worn it a handful of times because I really don't have anywhere to wear it. I wore it once to work last fall and ended up taking it off because I was afraid I would get color on it. It is so fun though. I want to listen to old David Bowie when I wear it.

It has been far too long since I did a ton ten list! I think the last was right before Halloween..eek!

Weekly Wears - Boots and Bridges

Hello darling readers! This outfit post is long overdue..I got a little busy over the holiday weekend and the time just slipped away from me. So today, Tom and I went down to the river to take a couple snapshots.

Sometimes the best outfits come from items that I have completely forgotten about. I have had this dress for years and years, and it was hiding in the back of my closet. Same with the boots. When I found these boots on my shelf, I squealed with delight- they used to be my all time favorite shoes! I even bought two pairs of them just in case!

Thanksgiving!

Hello lovelies!! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! It was so nice to have a couple days off of work and to get to spend time with all the people I love the most!

I love how there are touches of Christmas appearing everywhere. My grandparent's house ( above photos) always looks the cutest with all of it's holiday decor.

I filled up on so many yummy dishes. I am a huge sucker for sweet potatoes.

My niece and nephew are the cutest! We decided to go out and play football since it was super nice out! I can't remember the last Thanksgiving that had 60 degree weather!

Then later at my mom's house, we all had fun playing some family games together. Clue, Life, Scrabble. The best.

Black Friday was a success as wel! My mom, sister, and I ventured out to Target around 6 am, and it wasn't even that crazy out.
I scored some awesome stuff online too. Red Velvet had all of their dresses 50 percent off, so I picked up a couple of those!

Next up, Christmas! Can't wait! I have been in a decorating frenzy around the house. I love this time of year!!

I feel so lucky to be able to spend my days with this bearded sweetie. He is the kindest man I have ever known and everyday I find myself stepping back and thinking to myself "Wow. How did I get so lucky?"
He is the best. It is a great feeling to know that I have truly found my other half.

My mother, sister, Granny
These three women are the most amazing people in the world. I cannot imagine my life without them. They have all had such a significant impact on my life and the way I live. My feelings are seriously indescribable. This is why I have a tattoo on my forearm dedicated to them! I have all three's favorite flowers, and my mother's maiden name Seusy. So they are with me always!

My little baby pumpkin pie! My sweet, sweet little munchkin! He brings me SO much joy every single day! And he is the cuddliest little pup you ever did see. Plus, his paws smell amazing. It is my favorite smell in the world. Yes, I'm weird. He is just the best doggie ever.

My Job
In this day and age, I feel blessed to have a steady job/paycheck. I feel lucky to be able to work with such a great group of people and to have the best clients ever! I really just enjoy what I do for a living, and I don't ever take it for granted. I love going to work every day and I know many people that don't so I am very thankful!

I am so thankful to call so many of the best people in the world my family! My mother's mother (my granny) grew up in Naples, Italy until she married my grandfather and moved to the United States. From a very young age, my Granny has told me so many amazing stories and taught me so many amazing things. She lives life to the fullest and enjoys every single breath. I still have family over there, too! When I was thirteen I got to go with her to visit her family home and old stomping grounds and the experience was unforgettable. I hope to someday go back when Tom and I get married so that we can share the rewarding experience of it all!

Weekend Round-up

Happy Monday!

It's been very busy at work! From now until Christmas we will probably be pretty swamped. Good thing I love it!

And one of my co-workers asked me to do her hair for her wedding in January. So that was very exciting :)

I also had a chance to hang out with some old high school friends, and it was just splendid. My friend Damon was celebrating his birthday and rounded up a huge group of my friends from high school to go on a party bus all around town. Talk about crazy. Haha. It was nice to see everyone and all spend time together as a whole group. I can't remember the last time we were all in the same place!

Then yesterday Tom and I did a TON of yard work. So much raking and trimming and pulling. I was so tired after we were done, I took a huge nap..which I never do. I'm like the only person alive who can't take naps. My body just doesn't want to stop going. And then I stayed up too late. Curses on that nap!

Floral and Blue

Hello lovelies! Egads, it has been a while since my last outfit post! I have just been busy running around!

We took this over the weekend at a pretty little park. It is sad to look at because I know the leaves are mostly on the ground now! We have had super warm weather, but the wind has been a little strong and blown leaves all over the place. 90 percent of the trees on my street are bare now. Wah!

It is super rainy and icky here in Illinois today. All I want to do is curl up with my coffee and cuddle with Oscar all day. But alas, I have other commitments.

At our salon we usually make a mini-magazine every season or so, showcasing different colors or cuts and usually featuring clothing from a store around the area. It is nice to give our clients something different to look at and to also give them some inspiration.

So today we will be shooting our next magazine. And it will probably take all day. But no complaints here because my sister is my model this time around. Yay. I get to hang out with her all day and make some pretty hair.

PS- I was in the last magazine we did. Yikes.

New Found Glory

Last night, I went with a group of friends to Iowa City, Iowa to see a New Found Glory show. It was amazing!

I used to listen to them all the time when they released their first couple albums, and their music reminds me of being a teenager. They seem like such a great group of guys and they really put on a great show!
Set Your Goals, The Wonder Years, Man Overboard, and This Time Next Year also played. Super lineup.

We went to the Blue Moose Tap House, which is a bar with a space in the back for shows. It is a smaller area and so we were all packed in there. I got all sweaty but I had such a great time.

I took these pictures on my IPhone so they aren't the greatest! I was too busy jumping!

this is such a gross picture. i guess this means i have taken our blog relationship to the next level, eh?

After the show we went to Pita Pit, my favorite! I wish we had one in our area! The closest is Iowa City, which is 45 minutes away. Boo!

Pretty Leaves

I am making some vegetarian chili at the moment, and trying to clean up while watching some scary movies on tv.
We are having some friends/family over tonight to eat and hand out candy. It should be lovely!

Polka Dots and Weeping Willows

thursday top ten: halloween edition

WOO!

Okay so today I have compiled my Top Ten Horror movies!

I am a huge fan of scary movies, and even as a kid I was never scared of them! I love the feeling of being spooked!

10. The Strangers

This is one of the first movies to give me the chills in a long time. I never saw this in theaters because I thought it looked cheesy and dumb, like most horror movies these days are. I watched it one night on a movie channel at like, 3 in the morning. I was hooked: it is so freaky and awesome. I love the masks of the killers and how they just appear in the background of a shot. Scary!

9. High Tension

This is a great movie if you like lots of gore and violent killings..haha. It was pretty intense. It really is a good horror movie though, just don't be put off by the dubbing- it is a little poorly done. This one has got an awesome ending that you won't see coming!

8. Planet Terror

One of my favorite movies ever! It is so great and over the top. Plus, zombie movies are always so entertaining. Rose McGowan is a total badass in this. Her character Cherry Darling ( I totally use her name for my email address!) is gorgeous and has a gun for a leg- genius! I will forever want to be her for Halloween..I'm just not quite sure how to pull it off!

7. Friday the 13th

Great old, and a tad cheesy, horror movie. It is a classic and I will always love the crazy old lady as the killer! I love the Jason movies..even Freddy vs. Jason. I have a hard time admitting that I like that movie..the shame..the shame!

6. Scream

5. American Psycho

Love, love, 1000 times love this movie! I grew up thinking Christian Bale was a total babe ( The Newsies, Little Women..hello?!) and then I randomly watched this with a group of my friends on a late Saturday night in high school. At first, I thought this was one of the most messed up movies I had ever seen. But after watching it a couple times, and getting over the initial shock, it has become one of my favorites. Just be warned. It's weird! I will forever see him as this character!

4. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Such a classic! Tom dressed up as Dr. Frank-N-Furter last year for Halloween and I was Magenta!
I need to admit- I listen to this soundtrack in my car AT LEAST twice a month. The songs are amazing! I can watch this movie a million times and never tire of it. Fun fact- I have been known to cry at the end when Dr. Frank-N-Furter dies! It is so sad when Rocky is carrying him up the tower! Wah!

3. House of 1000 Corpses

Ahh. Rob Zombie. My love! This was his first time writing and directing a movie and the man pulls it off. Love the characters. Love the crazy almost fantasy design of the clothing and scenes. Love the story. Everything is amazing. Watch it!

2. The Devils Rejects

Another Rob Zombie film! Another past Halloween Costume- Tom was Capt. Spaulding (the clown) and I was Baby Firefly. This is the sequel to House of 1000 Corpses and even though it has the same main characters, the story and design are completely different. This is definitely more real life then the first. The whole movie has a definite 70's theme to it. And the story is great. The ending of this movie is the best ending ever.

1. Halloween

The movie that started it all. I truly believe that this movie paved the way for all horror movies. It was the first movie, in it's time, that scared the crap out of everyone. Michael Myers is a freaky ass character. He is completely void of all emotion and has no reason (that we know of in this movie) for any of the killings. He just stalks around and uses a huge butcher knife like a crazy freak! And I love how simple it is- no bloody, gory scenes. Plus, the clothing and styles are absolutely amazing!It is a tradition in my house to watch this movie on Halloween night. I can remember watching it when I was young, and my mother would cover my eyes at any scary/bloody parts. This movie will always remind me of the Halloween holiday.

Definitely reminds me of my childhood! This is also a Halloween movie tradition!

The weather this weekend was so warm and lovely!

The sun was shining brightly through all the trees and casting a golden glow all over. It was gorgeous and filled me up with happiness. I just love this time of the year. We have had a great fall here and it has been unusually warm.

I got these shorts from Forever 21 and I adore their vintage-sailor look to them. They do have a random button flap on the front right side, and the left side is bare..hmm. The poor left side has nothing.
